For what is probably the 25th night in a row, I have not been able to sleep. I go to bed early, around 10pm and manage to sleep until about 1am and then I'm up. Wide awake. I can't get comfortable, I toss and turn and my mind RACES. I finally manage to fall asleep again around 5am, which during the work-week really sucks because I have to get up at 6am. Of course on the weekend, I end up snoozing on the couch for most of the afternoon because I'm so damned tired and that's just not helping either.
I don't know what the problem is, but I can't keep going like this.
Suggestions?
Ask your RE/OB about taking a small dose of Melatonin. I'm stimming for IVF but still okay'd to take it and it helps me sleep through the night (I was having very frequent patterns of waking for hours like you describe). I hope you can get good sleep soon... not sleeping sucks!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you haven't been sleeping well. There's a lot of big things going on in your life right now, so it's no surprise your mind is racing. Do you have any relaxation cds you can listen to while you're going to sleep??
ReplyDeleteSide note--- I read your post in google reader first and the ad underneath it was for a mattress :) maybe it's a sign you need a new mattress?!
I had a really hard time sleeping at about the same time in pregnancy - it must be the hormones. Listening to Circle and Bloom pregnancy meditations before bed did help some, but I think my sleep finally got better because my hormones changed again. I hope the same happens for you!
ReplyDeleteI always do meditations when I can't sleep. I do one where I lay however I want for sleep, close my eyes and think of a color. Then I visualize everything I can think of that is that color, then I move on to another color. If I get through like 6 colors and still can't sleep, then I try visualizing a computer keyboard in my minds eye. Then I make my eyes move to the different letters of whatever I'm thinking. That knocks me out most of the time. My problem is more not falling asleep than waking up in the middle of the night though. Hoping it gets better soon!
ReplyDeleteI know you probably can't exercise alot now, but I find that if I walk or run before dinner, I am always sleepy. What about prenatal yoga?
ReplyDeleteI only sleep for 3-4 hours at a time & when I can't get back to sleep, I find that reading a novel helps...it allows me to "turn my mind off" & I find my eyes get heavy pretty quick.
ReplyDeleteYou say your mind races - so I am assuming there are projects that are unfinished or your being hard on yourself or worried about something. When I was first pregnant, I went into a panic and had a hard time not worrying about everything. It was the hormones and maybe that is something that is happening to you. It is amazing how intense they can be. I remember talking to friends helped me relax and get reassured. It goes away and from what I hear it is part of the whole process.
